The lecture in one of my classes today dealt with the fundamental link between photographs and human memory, and how really strange it is, wytai, that memory can bestow such huge emotional significance upon a simple rectangle of paper covered in ink. And photographs can work in the opposite direction, giving emotional significance to an object that would otherwise be nothing more to me than several tons of steel bolted together to transport people from island to mainland.

What an interesting (and, for some reason, slightly eerie) thought—that I should be running across that exact same bridge nineteen years after that top photo was taken. After this evening’s Billyburg jog, I look at that top photo and find myself not remembering or hearkening back, but—and I really can’t think of another way to express this—retrospectively looking forward. Neither I nor my parents knew or expected that I would be back in that exact spot two decades hence. I look at my tiny face in the top photo and can’t help but shake my head in awe that that infant will spend the next nineteen years doing the things I’ve done, going the places I’ve gone, and end up here, in this dormitory desk chair. I look at those minuscule hands and am shocked that they’re mine, that they’re now here in front of me, helping me regurgitate all this nonsense. No, I don’t remember being on that boat or wearing that hat, or anything from when I was that age at all, for that matter. And it feels strange that I’m both still that person and someone entirely different, that I’ve been here before, that I’ve lived here before, when I remember nothing and feel like a complete stranger in what’s essentially my hometown. But I feel a connection, nonetheless—an emotional one, however trite that sounds. And I find those two feelings of homecoming and strangeness are constantly tugging at each other in my head.
